Agartala: May 26: A political storm has erupted in Tripura following allegations that the District Magistrate (DM) of Gomati, Tarit Kanti Chakma, behaved inappropriately toward Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. The Tipra Motha youth organization, expressing strong disapproval, held a press conference alongside Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, demanding the DM’s immediate removal.

The controversy stems from an incident where Pradyot Kishore and the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Autonomous District Council (ADC) visited the DM’s official residence to discuss urgent matters. According to Tipra Motha leaders, the DM not only refused to meet them but also failed to extend basic courtesy expected from a public servant. This perceived snub has sparked outrage among supporters and led to statewide criticism.

During the press briefing, a youth leader of the party emphasized that as the administrative head of the district, the DM has a duty to remain accessible, especially to elected representatives and citizens with pressing concerns. Alleging that the DM routinely avoids the public, the organization warned that if he is not removed or at least made to apologize and transferred within four days, they will lock down all government offices in Gomati district and launch an intensified protest.

The incident has taken a political turn, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties who see it as a failure of bureaucratic accountability. The Tipra Motha youth organization’s demands reflect growing frustration with administrative indifference in tribal areas and highlight tensions between elected tribal leaders and state authorities.

As the deadline nears, all eyes are on the state government’s response, with many wondering whether it will side with the demands of the indigenous leadership or stand by its official.
