The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has called on all food vendors in the city to secure mandatory certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to ensure public health and consumer trust. The appeal was made during an awareness camp jointly organised by AMC and Agartala Smart City at Sukanta Academy Hall on Tuesday. The initiative aimed to sensitise street food vendors about hygiene standards and the importance of food safety compliance.Speaking at the event, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder highlighted the role of street vendors in the city’s food ecosystem and stressed the need for health and hygiene. “Street vendors cater to thousands every day. If they are in good health, they are likely to serve clean food. It is their responsibility to make hygiene a priority,” he said. The event also featured health check-ups for vendors, underscoring AMC’s commitment to ensuring a healthy workforce in the informal food sector. Agartala Smart City CEO Sailesh Kumar Yadav stressed the importance of FSSAI certification. “This certificate assures customers that your food is safe and meets quality standards. Displaying it at your stall builds trust and credibility,” he said.Yadav also announced that more vending licenses will soon be issued based on demand, while stressing the need to keep roads free from congestion caused by unregulated vending. With over 3,000 vendors operating in Agartala and more than 8,000 statewide, AMC officials said that dedicated vending zones have already been created in most civic bodies to streamline operations and maintain urban order. The civic body urged all unregistered vendors to regularise their operations and align with food safety regulations to ensure both public well-being and business sustainability
